GM foods, labeling, gluten-free drinks – news to October 9 2011

The EU ruled that honey containing traces of pollen from genetically modified plants must receive prior authorization before it can be sold as food. They also set rules for food labels. In the USA, a coalition of businesses and organizations dedicated to food safety and consumer rights called for mandatory labeling of GM foods. It’s not always obvious whether drinks contain gluten – an article explains what to look out for.

In September, the EU Court of Justice, the highest court in the bloc, ruled that honey containing traces of pollen from genetically modified plants must receive prior authorization before it can be sold as food in the EU. In some honey-producing countries, such as Argentina, GM crops are widely used.

A coalition of nearly 400 businesses and organizations dedicated to food safety and consumer rights has filed a petition with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) calling for the mandatory labeling on food products that use genetically modified ingredients.

European Union sets rules for food labels Oct-7-11Food Politics
According to Food Chemical News (October 7), the European Union has finally agreed on rules for food labels. Packaged foods will have to be labeled with amounts of calories, fat, saturated fats, carbohydrate, protein, sugars and salt. Amounts are to be expressed per 100 grams or 100 milliliters.

Drinks containing gluten include bottled juice drinks and smoothies containing barley grass or wheat grass (which may be contaminated); malted milk and malted milk powder; nondairy milks made with soy or rice which may contain malt or barley malt; Starbucks Frappuccino Light drinks; beers; and some wine coolers containing malt flavoring. Always check ingredients.
